Retrospective analysis
The retrospective analysis is the method used for obtaining information about the area in the past. This analysis allows you to identify any changes in the qualitative and quantitative aspect in certain time periods, which can be set depending on the survey subjects. The retrospective analysis is used in the study of the current state of territories to assess the dynamics of their development.
The retrospective analysis is used to address the following key tasks:
- to analyse the drop out of agricultural land from circulation
- to analyse changes in the status of forest land, in particular, the retrospective monitoring of the felling operations
- to determine the dynamics of disturbed, degraded, and polluted lands
- to determine the dynamics of the development of negative processes and any dangerous geological processes and phenomena
By performing a number of tasks, the retrospective analysis conducted based on satellite imagery is the only way to obtain reliable information about the area due to the absence or incompleteness of other historical data sources (statistical reporting, area descriptions, and inspection results). Also, when it comes to the survey file materials, there is the problem of lack of full coverage of the territory with the necessary comparable thematic cartographic materials for different time periods. The use of satellite imagery allows you to avoid these problems and to ensure full coverage of the territory with reliable data for the required time periods.
SCANEX has its own multi-year archive of satellite imagery data that is used by experts for conducting the retrospective analysis. In the analysis, the terrain current state mapping is usually based on materials of high spatial resolution, while the retrospective mapping is based on materials of high and medium spatial resolution.

The results of the retrospective analysis are a set of maps drawn up for different time periods and arranged by a single methodology based on the rule of continuity of contours. The result of the work can also be a statistical qualitative and quantitative analysis of the dynamics in the interest areas.
